Description

In the year 1943, A.Reynolds and Eleanor Morses started for the first time to collect paintings of Salvador Dali. Eventually, they decided to donate the artworks with a condition that the artworks should remain untouched. St. Petersburg was chosen to be the city to contain the shrine of Dali because it resembled Dali’s native Catalonia in terms of sea and rocks. The old museum was opened in the year 1982 and gradually the size of the collection grew. Dali’s work ‘The Persistence of Memory’ was given to the museum in the year 2002 by the Museum of Modern Art; it marked the worldwide renown the museum had gathered.

Design of Salvador Dalí Museum:

To accommodate the increasing number of artworks and to protect the artworks from hurricanes, the new place was needed. A gleaming glass structure, known as ‘the Enigma’ was created, spiraling staircases and many other similar touches were employed to design the museum building as a means of honoring Dali. ‘The Helical Staircase’ in the Dali Museum was inspired by Dali’s obsession with spiral figures. 96 of Dali’s most well-known paintings.

The museum also contains 100 of the artist’s most famous watercolors, drawing and 1,300 other objects like sculptures and graphics. The museum also contains a loop of the surrealist movie- ‘Un Chien Andalou’. The ‘Avant-Garden’ is situated behind the museum where one can relax on a bench of bizarre shape. Adjacent to it is a maze of hedges. And to get into the museum one has to find his way out of the labyrinth.

Dali Merchandises:

The path into the museum leads through a huge store of exclusive Dali merchandises. Amidst all the merchandises a distinct piece of art can be found, it’s called- ‘Rainy Rolls 2010’. It was engineered by the Tampa Bay Auto Museum, taking inspiration from Dali’s ‘Rainy Taxi’. The building also has a café, theater, class room and a student gallery. On the center of the building, like a strand of DNA stands the 75-foot spiral known as the “Helical Staircase”. After climbing the curious staircase, the view from the atrium of Tampa Bay is fascinating. Here two of the most impressive galleries are situated. Some of Dali’s largest works can be found here, which are adequately lit using skylights. The Hough Family Wing, the second gallery, displays other mediums of Dali’s works such as sculptures, films, photographs and work done using paper.

The collection is huge and gives one a thorough glimpse into the life of Salvador Dali. It is quite overwhelming to see the early works of Dali and witness his evolvement through each work. Dali’s sketches are very interesting as they somewhat reveal Dali’s thought processes. Other than only displaying the artworks of Dali, it is the aim of the museum to educate the students and to promote understanding of art amongst student.
